About Me
My name is Marissa Bennett and I am a second year masters student at Clemson University. I am currently completing a master of arts in communication, focusing primarily on sport and health communication. Following graduation I am pursuing a career in either health communication and promotion or athletic academic advising. Careers I have been looking into include, but are not limited to, health adverse behavior prevention, health education, and athletic academic advising. I am passionate about sports and helping others achieve their goals/potential so health communication and promotion or athletic academic advising are outlets that stand out to me as ways to work in a career I am passionate about. And while these careers appear to be very different, they have the same root goal of helping others along their education journey, whether that be through health education/communication or academic education assistance.
For thirteen years, I was a competitive gymnast through the USA Gymnastics organization. Through gymnastics I gained an interest in understanding the physiology behind each athletic movement as well as an interest in injuries and rehabilitation. Through the sport I saw a wide variety of injuries and even experienced some injuries of my own, many of which could have possibly been prevented through better return to play procedures or a greater understanding of the mechanics behind overuse/compensation injuries. From there, my passion for injury prevention, through data analysis and recovery modalities, and related health education was born. While at Clemson, I was presented with the opportunity to work on fall prevention with older adults in the Upstate of South Carolina. Through this project, I realized I am passionate about the implementation and education against a wider range of adverse health behaviors beyond just injury prevention, broadening my career interests. Additionally, I have been working in an education role since high school. At Clemson, as an athletics tutor, I witnessed education disparities and became excited about finding ways to decrease that gap and help students reach their goals. From there, an interest in the career field of athletic academic advising was born. I see myself in an education role of some capacity, whether that be working with students in an academic setting or with the general public on health behaviors/health education - that remains to be seen. I am open to all opportunities in these related fields to explore where I can best be happy and suited to pursue my passions.
Feel free to navigate through my page, which highlights my experiences and accomplishments as well as my contact information. I would love the opportunity to speak with you about how I could apply my passions to work at your organization!

Interests

As a member of Clemson Miracle, I help raise awareness for the needs and work required by the local pediatric hospitals, and I help to raise money to go toward funding the local pediatric hospital wards and families staying there. I have participated in these fundraising events through the sharing of information and raising donations on social media.

As a member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity I am involved in the community outreach programs to support our philanthropy of Read, Lead, Achieve. We run book buddies, a weekly event where we go into local elementary schools and read to the kids. For fundraising, I help fundraise and run Pi Phi Pizookie night and BBQ for books which helps raise money for Read, Lead, Achieve.
